MUSKOGEE, OK — When Emma Whitehead needed a babysitter to watch her 1-month-old baby named Calvin during the day while she was working, the babysitter she normally used was unavailable. In most likely the worst mistake of her life, she then turned to enlist the help of the baby's father, Robert Jones Jr., who she had separated from.
On Sunday, Emma finally saw something in her newborn that couldn't go without medical attention — seizures. She brought the baby to a hospital in Tulsa to be checked out by doctors who were horrified.
Baby Calvin was deemed to be in critical condition with his skull cracked in two places and his brain bleeding. There were bruises around his eyes and fingerprint bruises around both sides of his neck, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Robert Jones Jr. confessed to the abuse.
According to police, Robert told them the baby wouldn't stop crying and so he grabbed the baby by the throat and repeatedly shook him, going so far as to throw the 1-month-old in the ceiling fan. Robert also admitted to covering the infant in cushions to muffle his cries and even dropped him on the bathroom floor, Calvin's head slamming against the hard toilet.
The mother stated she knew the father had been violent before but didn't expect him to hurt their son. Robert Jones Jr. was jailed for six counts of child abuse.
The abuse occurred between August 16 to August 19.
Under critical police questioning, Emma Whitehead claimed she saw Robert cover the baby in cushions but "only told him not to do that because that is how children suffocate," doing nothing more to stop the abuse day after day so she could work. After obtaining enough evidence, police also jailed Emma for enabling child abuse.
