DAVIDSON COUNTY, NC — A teacher at Ledford Middle School was arrested and charged Monday for allegedly having sexual relations with a 14-year-old student from August to October 2009.
Lisa Annette Williams, now 50 years old, has since bonded out of jail under strict conditions.
Police said the victim finally came forward in July when he was in his early 20s, a move they often see since sufferers of sexual abuse may take time to gain enough strength to speak up, often fearing no one would believe them if they did report such abuse. There is no statute of limitations for sex crimes in North Carolina, a policy more U.S. states are adapting.
Williams was not only a teacher to the victim but also a close family friend. In the next few months after the report, investigators gathered enough evidence to support the victim's accounts and arrested her.
According to police, all the sexual encounters occurred off school property.
Williams was charged with two counts of statutory rape, four counts of statutory sex offenses and indecent liberties with a child.
Davidson County School officials stated they needed more information to warrant firing her from the district and remained hush on whether she was suspended or not.
