MILWAUKEE, WI — 37-year-old Milwaukee resident Carrie Bernard was pulled over Thursday afternoon after an officer noticed her 8-year-old son sitting on her lap while merging on a highway.
The child was steering the vehicle because the mother was too drunk, police allege, as she was controlling just the gas and brake pedals.
When an officer from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office approached the SUV, the 8-year-old child was crying, fearing jailtime.
"I don’t want to go to jail," the young voice trembled.
Ordered out of the vehicle, Bernard appeared drunk, according to police reports. She failed field sobriety tests and was subsequently arrested for DUI. She is expected to face additional charges of reckless endangerment, interlock ignition device violation and operating after revocation for previous DUI-related offenses.
Indeed, this incident marks Bernard’s third DUI arrest. She had no immediate plans to cut her bad habits while sitting in the back of the patrol car.
"I think I might have a drink after this," she could be heard saying on police video.
The child is now in the care of Child Protective Services.
